HARLAND MILLER

 

Harland Miller is an acclaimed writer and artist, born in 1964 in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.  Miller achieved critical acclaim with his debut novel in 2000 the same year he published a small novella. He explores the relationship between words and images and the process of producing meaning in his paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works.

 

Interested in canonical authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Ernest Hemingway and drawing influence from Ed Ruscha, Mark Rothko, Anselm Kiefer, and Robert Rauschenberg, Miller combines text and images to comment on the frequent disconnect between representation and reality. Miller is best known for his large-scale, photorealist paintings of vintage Penguin book covers. This notable series of paintings the artist transformed canvases into satirical Penguin book covers, combined with the iconic Penguin logo and keenly witty titles—like The Me I Never Knew (2009). His muted tones and painterly brushstrokes imbue his canvases with the worn character of a used book, yet nevertheless manage to convey a contemporary, subversive sociopolitical critique.
